Autism is a neurobiological disorder of development that causes differences in the way information is processed.  These differences affect the ability to:  understand and use language; respond appropriately to the environment; understand and respond to stimuli; relate to people, events and objects; form relationships; and engage in imaginative play.  Hope Haven provides a comprehensive assessment and a range of therapeutic, educational and behavioral services to meet the needs of child and family.

Signs of Autism

There are several important reasons for identifying autism.  Children with autism benefit from early intervention.  Their strengths and areas for concentrated treatment need to be determined.  Appropriate medical services need to be accessed, and parents need to have their concerns addressed.  Assessments include:

  • medical/physical development
  • cognitive and language skills
  • physical therapy evaluation
  • occupational therapy evaluation
  • sensory integration.

Some signs and symptoms of autism include:

  • avoids eye contact
  • starts developing language, then suddenly stops
  • remains fixated on a single item or activity
  • flaps hands or rocks
  • appears inaccessible, as if in shell
  • acts as if unaware of the comings and goings of others
  • sniffs or licks toys.
