Hope Haven’s educational services are designed to enhance a child’s learning by pinpointing specific strengths and weaknesses. Individually administered tests are used to measure intelligence and academic achievement. The results can be used to diagnose learning disabilities, recommend remedial programs, assess school-related behavior problems and identify strategies that can best meet each child’s learning needs.
Consultation
Hope Haven’s Educational Specialists can provide the latest information about educational and vocational opportunities available throughout our community. Their objective recommendations will help in making the right choices for each child’s present and future educational needs.
Testing
Individualized testing offers parents and teachers the most accurate measure of a child’s progress in basic academic skills. After testing, Hope Haven’s educational specialists will provide detailed information about academic strengths, weaknesses, and learning style, and will recommend appropriate strategies to achieve success in school.
School Visits
Educational specialists are available to visit the child’s school to objectively assess classroom performance and behavior, and to determine the techniques and strategies that will facilitate learning. Educational specialists share professional recommendations with the classroom teacher in a positive manner and work to enhance the sense of partnership between parents and school.
Psychological-Educational Evaluations
A psych-ed evaluation consists of individually administered standardized tests used to measure the child’s intelligence and academic achievement and to pinpoint specific learning strengths and weaknesses. Psych-ed evaluation results are used in the diagnosis and treatment of learning disabilities, in determining appropriate school placement for remedial programs, and in the assessment of school-related behavior problems.
A psych-ed evaluation process includes:
- Collection of information about the child, such as school reports and medical history, prior to the first appointment
- Review of the information by Hope Haven psychologists and educational specialists in preparation for meeting with the parent and child for consultation and testing. In addition to testing, the child’s evaluation may include a school visit for classroom observation and teacher conference.
- Meeting following testing with the child’s evaluation team for in-depth discussion of recommendations based on observations and test results
- Preparation of a written report that will be thoroughly explained at the parent conference
- Follow-along and monitoring of the child’s progress for as long as needed.
